Marketing Agencies: Change, now.

... because: the way things are going, it really can't continue.
Tip: Listen to this post as a podcast
The marketing and communication industry is in a crisis. After decades of resting on established methods, it has become increasingly clear: resting on past laurels cannot continue. Digital transformation is long overdue. It's not just a buzzword. It is the key to survival and relevance in a rapidly changing world. But what is blocking the industry from finally moving, and how can it overcome its own barriers?
An article from Horizont.net once again inspired me. It is titled "World's largest advertising genre: How social media is becoming the engine of the global advertising market" (Link). I think about how urgently the industry needs to act. The article clearly shows that social media is now the largest advertising genre. Without a consistent reorientation towards digital platforms, many agencies will lose their relevance. This underscores the central message: The time for hesitation is over, and bold steps towards transformation are needed now.
Why clinging to the past leads us into crisis
In many agencies, there is a cultural problem. Successful campaigns from the past are cherished and celebrated like trophies, while the status quo is considered sacred. The question that must be asked, however, is: What are these successes still worth today? In a world characterized by rapid technological development, clinging to old approaches acts as a brake. Changed consumer needs demand new ways.
In many places, processes that were efficient 15 years ago are still maintained. Legacy tools, confusing workflows, and silo thinking characterize everyday work. The result: inefficient structures, frustrated employees, and stagnant creativity. Companies like Netflix, Spotify, or Tesla gain market share with data-driven approaches. They use agile methods. The agency industry, however, remains stuck in hierarchies. It insists on inefficient decision-making processes, not infrequently abuses power, and worships (supposedly) god-like icons of the industry. This is dangerous. Extremely dangerous.
Power structures as an obstacle to innovation
Another obstacle is the power dynamics in many agencies. Decisions are often made by a small circle that often does not know or ignores the realities of the market. These top-down approaches lead to new ideas being suppressed or not taken seriously. The fear of losing control blocks the willingness to delegate responsibility or take risks. This behavior stands in stark contrast to the agile principles that have already been successfully established in other industries.
An outdated portfolio and lack of flexibility
The product portfolio of many agencies also lags behind the times. Classic advertising formats such as print ads or linear TV campaigns continue to dominate strategies. Digital platforms have long since revolutionized the advertising world. While there are efforts to integrate social media and influencer marketing into offerings, it often remains half-hearted and often appears amateurish. Instead of seeing digital solutions as an integral part of the strategy, they are treated as an add-on.
Why we need to act now
The good news is: there is a way forward. Digital transformation offers enormous opportunities, but it requires courage and a willingness to self-reflect. It's not enough to buy new tools or insert a few buzzwords into presentations. Transformation means questioning the core of your own way of working.
Tools and Processes:
- Automation: Routine tasks such as reporting, data analysis, or content planning can be taken over by intelligent systems, leaving more time for creative work.
- Data Integration: Data silos must be removed to enable a central, holistic view of customers and projects.
- Cloud-based platforms: These offer flexibility and collaboration opportunities that are essential for the increasingly global and remote workforce.
Mindset and Culture:
- Culture of failure: Innovation requires experiments - and experiments bring mistakes. A culture that understands mistakes as learning opportunities is the breeding ground for true innovation.
- Ownership: Employees who can take responsibility work more efficiently and innovatively. Empowerment must be lived, not just preached.
- Interdisciplinary work: Teams from different disciplines must work collaboratively and on an equal footing to develop holistic solutions.

A look into the future: An industry with potential
The marketing and communication industry has shown impressive resilience. It has reinvented itself again and again, from the age of Mad Men to the digital revolution. But now it's about more: it's about changing the mindset of an entire industry. If agencies have the courage to question old structures, they can see digital transformation as an opportunity. Then they can not only survive. They can also play a leading role in shaping the future.
The insights from the aforementioned Horizont article confirm that the future of marketing is digital. Those who actively shape the change will drive the industry forward. The time for waiting is over. The future urges us to act now. Those who do not actively shape the change will be overwhelmed by it and risk sinking into insignificance. People who are willing to learn new things find endless opportunities. Those who take responsibility and make courageous decisions will be rewarded. It is in our hands to reshape the industry. We can make it a place where innovation, creativity, and technology truly go hand in hand.

Shadow AI in Agencies: Opportunities and Risks
The use of Shadow AI has become a significant topic in marketing and communication agencies in the German-speaking region. The urge for innovation, in particular, clashes with a lack of control mechanisms.
